The city is located about 190 kilometres (120 mi) east of the state capital Hyderabad and about 150 kilometres (93 mi) north of Warangal. As of 2011 Census of India, it had a population of 324,077.
Etymologically, “Kammam” or “Khammam” derives its name from the stupendous granite rock near the town which resembles like a sleeping bull (‘kambalam’ or ‘kambha’) with huge horns (‘kommu’).It was once called “Aswapuram” meaning “city having horse market”. Later it was renamed as “Stambhadri”. During Kakatiya dynasty rule it was known as “Kammavaram”, where ‘kammad’ means blacksmiths and ‘varam’ means market in Telugu Language. After Nizams ruled this area it was named as “Nawabpeta” during their regime period.[citation needed] In 1945, Nawab Sir Khursheed Jah Bahadur leased 930 km2(360 sq mi) to form Talakondapally taluk with its headquarters at then village Khammam Fort;[5][6] however he donated 540 km2(210 sq mi) to Andhra Pradesh Government for formation Gudivada taluk under Krishna District on 1 February 1953 through AP Reorganisation Act,[7][8] leaving only 390 km2(150 sq mi).[9][10]
On 1 October 1953, Talakondapally taluka split into two parts one went to East Godavari district’s West Godavari district due to Polavaram Project[11]. From that day until 31 October 1956 when states were reorganized on linguistic basis,[12][13] present-day Khammam District was part of composite Madras State represented by Madras Legislature.[14][15] According to 2011 census Khamman has an average literacy rate 84%, higher than national average 74%; male literacy is 90% and female literacy 78%.
