History:
The name “Gooty”, derived from “guttikonda” meaning hill top fort in Telugu language, refers to a small fort built by King Krishna Deva Raya during his campaign against Kalinga ruler Prataparudra. This fort was later occupied by Muslim rulers after their invasion and renamed as “Syed Wali Qutb Shah Fort”. The present day name “Guntakal” was given by British rulers after their occupation following defeat of Tipu Sultan who ruled this region under Mysore Kingdom at that time. The British used this place as their military base until independence after which it became part of Andhra Pradesh state when it was formed on 1 October 1953 along linguistic lines.
