After Charnock’s death in March 1692Job Charnock’s successors could not maintain cordial relations with Shaista Khan who sent an expedition against them led by Rayen Dass under whose command they were defeated & had to flee leaving behind their settlement & property which were destroyed completely except for few buildings like Old Court House Street , Writer’s Building , St John Cathedral etc . This event marks founding day anniversary celebration every year on 24 August as “Kalikata Day” or “Mother’s Day” because it was considered as rebirth or new beginning(in Bengali Prakriti means nature/mother).
